The Smudge & the Smear

The ashes upon your brow are smudged into the crevices of your decaying flesh in the very same spot that the anointing oil is artistically smeared into the pours of your delicate skin upon your initiation into the community of the King at your baptism.

In one and same space you are graced with both resurrection and then crucifixion. Neither one in its totality nor in its brutality, but none the less in the reality of the Way, the Truth and the Life of Jesus the Messiah and his followers.

Both the Oil and the Ashes mark you “as Christ’s own forever.” Nothing can separate us from the love of Christ.

Like the name of a specialty store, the church could be called “Oil & Ash”

YOU in the dirt and dignity of your whole being are the Sacrament of his Presence.
